The Train Up A Child Series, presently in two volumes contains 22 songs for youngsters ages 6-13.
It is designed to teach young children the fundamentals of reading music, following and making a score and singing in one, two and three parts. These two volumes are essential aimed towards children's choirs in the church but can be easily adaptable for school and community choirs as well. Many are based on bible verses and bible stores which can be used in Sunday School classes as well as in Vacation Bible shools of all denominations.
Among the 22 selections you will find uinson singing as well as 2 and 3 part songs in the classical tradition, including baroque style countepoint. It is suggested that the children be able to read at aproximately the second grade level in order to get the most benefit out of the songs. Choir directors and music teachers should be able to read the parts along with the students, pointing out such this as time signatures, types of notes and rests, names of notes in both clefs. This would be an ideal time to teach young students to mark parts with a pencil NOT WITH A PEN.
The Teacher's Director's Manual contains two sections. The first gives teaching tips and rehearsal techniques on out to present the material to the children. This is just a start. We strongly encourage each choir director to be as creative as possible in holding the interest of the student. Resist the temptation to teach these songs by rote. The whole purpose is to guiding the students into actually reading the notes and the lyrics.
We encourage the students to keep a journal of their feelings about each song and to learn to spell and define all of the "hard words". This will certainly help them with reading and writing which are the basic elements of all academic learning. Students could learn to build sets and act out some of the stories they sing about in the series. Puppet shows could be presented....... dance could be included and those students with adequate musical skill could play some of the accompaniments with adult or advanced accompanists.
There are interactive books for both volumes of Train Up A Child. They contain only the children's choir parts. We find it helpful for very young students to concentrate on their parts without having to deal with the sometimes complex piano accompaniments until later. We suggest that each child be provided his or her own book for each volume so that they can mark it and study it. CDs are also availabe for each volume. The interactive book and CD would make great gifts for your youngster. Also, It would be suggested that your church, school or community organization would purchase books equal to the number of participating students, We suggest that you keep these on the premises so that they are always available when needed.
Parents, children and teachers are suggested to study the songs together at home (for the parents) and at school or community locations (for the teachers). The front of each book has suggestions for activities which are fun and helpful to understanding the meanings of key words and meaning of the songs as well. Even if parents are not especially talented in music they can still play a very important role in working with their children on any level. If the child can teach the parents some of these musical and spiritual conceptsm well that is even better.
It has been proven that music can help teach many other academic subjects including math, science and history. In the very near future we intend to release volumes that deal with various school subjects and other interests, all under theTrain Up A Child umbrella. The styles in the songs cover classical, jazz, pop, rap, and Gospel. There is a prayer song and a patriotic presentation as well. Children and audiences love the music and they learn so many of lifes important lessons studying these songs. USE YOUR IMAGINATION.
It is our firm belief that the more children and adults singing and playing the better. However, the reality is, so many churches and schools just do not have adequate musicians to accompany these wonderful children's voices. To assist in this matter we have two accompaniment tracks for both volumes that can give the kind of musical support that makes these songs work so well. Consult the tapes and CDs page under ORDERS on this site for prices payment instruction.
Since so many music programs are being taken out of our schools and the only music some kids get is the radio, we want to offer music, even in the churches, with wholesome words, marts that are within their ranges and music that is fun, to sing yet must that sounds like and is appropriate for Children. If you share these same desires for your youngsters then we encourage you to purchase the entire Train Up A Child Series for individual study, school, church or community organization.
If you have suggestions for other music for your chldrens musical spiritual and academic growth, feel free to email us at your convenience. Thank you and GOD BLESS THE CHILDREN
